Lawmakers Go After Drivers Who Don't Move Over
(Springfield, IL) -- Several police officers and other first responders have been hit and killed on Illinois interstates in recent years, now lawmakers are taking action. State Senator Jason Barickman wants to increase fines for drivers who don't pull over for emergency vehicles. If the driver hits and kills someone, they could be charged with a Class B Misdemeanor and have their license suspended for two years, if Barickman has his way. Drivers are already required to move over for emergency vehicles but they don't always follow the law. At least five first responders have been killed on the roads since 2012, including one K-9 officer. Barickman's bill has already passed in the House and is headed for a vote in the senate.
